San Rafael Hills Home

“San Rafael Hills Home”

Perched on a 3.72-acre hillcrest with sweeping views of both the Rose Bowl and Pacific Ocean, this transformed post-and-beam residence features a newly introduced structural language of “L”-shaped block piers, laminated wood beams, and round concrete columns. Nearly all interior spaces were reconfigured under the original roof, culminating in a dramatic master suite that showcases panoramic vistas of the San Gabriel front range and the distant San Jacinto Mountains through floor-to-ceiling glass, “disappearing” corners, and cantilevered decks. Folding glass walls open the main living spaces to expansive decks and terraces, enabling seamless indoor-outdoor entertainment.

Phase two continued the vision with a new lap pool, spa, and open-air pavilion that aligns along the narrow crest overlooking Pasadena’s Arroyo Seco. Sharing the same concrete block and laminated beam construction, the pool house includes fold-away glass walls, a large wet bar, bath, and storage, while a roof angled for solar exposure efficiently heats the pool and spa. Strategically sited to capture both views and breezes, the pavilion “floats” over the steep hillside as the pool’s edges disappear on two sides. Minimalist detailing demanded precise craftsmanship to create this unified, contemporary compound high above the Arroyo.
